as part of the wood frenzy, I made these vases inlaid with wood rings. okay, techincally, they aren't inlaid, I guess. the wood goes through to the inside, so they are actually rings sandwiched between clay. ONE RING TO RULE THEM ALL!

sorry. couldn't help myself.

anyway, now that I have reminded you how nerdy I am, I will confess some other things as well:
1. I want to make about a dozen more of these in varying shapes and sizes for my next show.
2. maybe, just maybe, I will attempt vases with more than one ring. that could get tricky though;
3. when I fired them, they stuck together and there was a good bit that I thought I wouldn't be able to get them apart to put the wood in there.
4. I, of course, did not do the wood myself (thanks again, mike berg).
5. I need a new wood guy. mike berg can't devote his life to helping me. wah.

SO, ANYBODY KNOW ANY GOOD WOOD GUYS (OR GALS) I CAN HIRE?

I didn't get a chance to measure these, but they are glazed with eggshell wash outside and copper patina inside, which is what gives them that greenish tinge around the top lip. I also had to do some white underglaze around the areas where the wood was going so there wouldn't be weird unglazed areas. (underglaze won't stick together. actual glaze will.)

I give up. I simply cannot take a good photo of this; it is impossible. no, really. three other people have tried besides me, and not to sound ungrateful or anything, but they didn't do much better.

so trust me on this one. this mobile is adorable. yet not cute. it's got a kind of quiet sophistication about it so a real-life grown up (or someone pretending to be) can hang it in their house without being fodder for mocking. no really, it's hanging in our house right now, and the dog never mocks us over it.

anyway, mobiles are something different for me. and now I CAN'T STOP looking at them. I have pulled all sorts of inspiration pictures and ideas though I really have maybe one okay place to put one, and chris has some sort of weird aversion to them that I have never really understood. anyway, expect more mobiles. different ones too, though I really need to source hanging devices...

this one features all the favorite woodland animals from the tiles: moose, bear, fox, snail and squirrel. it's got NO GLAZE on it. just iron oxide, which brings out the faux wood grain on the animals. I saved the *glaze* for the real wood parts. (*oil, actually.) the "sticks" are oak (thank you, mike berg).

yes, I am still here. it's been a heck of a month (+). things have been crazy busy, and just crazy in general. so here we are; it's october, and I'm still recapping august.

anyhoo... enough with the self recriminations. I made these! and they were in my show. and they were big sellers. maybe because they were reasonably priced, or maybe because they are cute as heck. you be the judge. but I mean come! on! woodland animals! on tiny easels!

each one was different sized – whatever felt right for the animal. the moose, for example (on the far right of the first photo), was about 7 or 8 inches square.
I applied iron oxide stain before glazing the interior of each animal with copper patina.

N O T C H - B O W L S

I was at a loss of what to name these, but ended up calling them the "notch bowls" because of the wood notches in them. SOOO creative, eh? later, someone suggested they look like owl beaks, so I thought about renaming them. but by now I have been calling them the notch bowls for so long that changing the name would just confuse me.

anyway, these turned out awesome. (meaning, just like I had hoped.) a lot of people said they were their favorites, and they are one of mine as well.

I didn't get measurements before I sold them off (thank you, melanie and justin for finding them two new homes that make me happy). but the small ones are about teacup sized and the larger one is about the size a teenage boy might use as a ice cream bowl. or what you might feed your australian shepherd from.

as promised, here is a piece from the show. this one was one of my favorites, yet it didn't sell. maybe I overpriced it, but to be honest, I DON'T CARE. it's worth it. you'll have to take my word on that because sort of like a good hair day, it's difficult to get a good photo of. I think the first one shows it best.

anyway, the big circle in the center is actually a piece of oak. yes, real wood. not that fake wood texture I'm addicted to. REAL WOOD. the oak has been stained dark, sliced to a very thin thinness, and cut exactly to fit in the hole, which I promise you, is not exactly perfect... I mean, is totally perfect. this was a cinch. (special thanks here to michael berg, chris's college roomie, and Master of Wood. he's the lucky guy who got to help me with all the pieces on which I decided to experiment with the materials combo.)

by the way, the diagonal lines in the wood aren't the grain. the grain runs up and down with the fake wood texture grain on the ceramic part. the diagonal lines are cellulite. okay, not true. it's caused by a twist in the wood and has a sort of shine to it. but that's kind of like stretch marks, right?

this piece is biggish. I forgot to measure it, so for now I'll guess and change this later. I'd say it's about 10 or 11 inches wide x 5.5 inches deep x 14 or 15 inches tall. and the walls are thin! and I continue to be impressed that with such thin walls this madness worked!

I have a report on two things:

1. the bench. it did not make it into the show. it was just too dang problematic for me to be able to solve in time. also? it might need redesigning altogether to make it work. I admit I did have a little bit of a tough time coming to the realization that it wasn't going to work. or maybe I should say ACCEPTING. because you know what? I freaking busted my ass to get that done in time.

fail.

but rest assured, you have not seen the end of the bench. in fact, you might see a lot of progress reports on it as I attempt to make it work by christmas. I hope.

2. the show. it was a great success. I sold a ton of work. I have a little left over even, which is nice because some of that is stuff I really liked and would love the chance to enjoy before it finds a new home (see also: holiday sale). I can also post that work here, once I have photos of it. which I will. have photos.

S N E A K - P E E K

the show is tomorrow. I am working my butt off to get the pièce_de_résistance done. what is that, you ask?

a bench.

I made the legs out of ceramic and the top is a 2.5" thick slab of walnut. so I'm sanding my arms off today in the hopes i can get it to:
a. fit.
b. not have any huge gaps between the wood and the ceramic parts
c. get it finished (sanded and oiled) in time.

maybe it'll happen. maybe it won't. maybe it will and there will be a sign saying "please don't touch; it's wet."

I am trying to be very zen about it.

here's the poster for the show. fellow show-mate, curtis, took charge of this. each of the artists in the show designed a layer and curtis blended them all together and took on silk-screening this bad boy. it's 18"x18" and will be sold without the info tab at the show for $10 each.

since crunch time for the show is upon us (me), and I just got news that a couple of things might not have survived the kiln the way I had hoped, I am going to post some things I did a long time ago, un-pottery-related.

it's been too long. and I have a desk full of work I haven't shown you. but I also had planned to try chris's other camera to see if I would do better shooting with that. you know, less complicated, less cursing. and then it got stolen out of our truck, along with chris's laptop.

anyway, I have Grand! Plans! for this show. lots of experiments going on here, and lots of possibility for failure. and lots of work. I don't want to give anything away yet, but am trying to document what I've got going on, so that I'll be able to share. and I've been working on projects almost every day in the hopes of getting things ready in time.

G R A Y - L I N E - B O W L

yup. it's a line bowl. and it's gray. but there's a TWIST! hold on to your horses:
this one has TWO LINES. one on the back and one on the front. and the lines go all the way to the foot ring.

I KNOW, RIGHT? I might as well throw out all the rules.

this crazy dish is 5.125 inches in diameter x 2.25 inches tall. the inside is steel blue. no, it's something else. oh man, I can't remember the name of that glaze. I'll have to update that later this week. but it's cool, right? the gray/blue? I like the way it breaks and changes color a little bit sometimes. the outside is glazed with eggshell wash.

C E R A M I C S - S H O W C A S E

every year, the oregon potters association has a big showcase at the convention center where all the local potters (okay, not all, but a lot), set up booths and sell their wares. it's great. they run it like a big grocery store full of pottery. so basically you wander around, pick up anything you like and take it to a checkout at the end. (yes, they have a holding area so you don't have to tote around a bunch of heavy pottery.)

anyway, it was this past weekend. and this year, I helped my teacher, kristy with her booth (you can watch a little video her husband made about it, here). I also shopped around for ideas, drooled over a few things here and there, and generally got inspired. here are a few highlights:

S E D E R - P L A T E

this is a story. and it starts with someone named mike. mike is a friend who bought this casserole dish from me for his girlfriend, emily. emily likes to cook, you see. (no, that is not emily in the photo.) emily decided that she liked it. (phew!) and emily asked if I would make a special commission for her good friend, sarah, who was getting married. what did I say? OF COURSE. emily told me sarah's favorite holiday is passover, so emily asked for a seder plate. for sarah. for a wedding gift. in time for passover.

the lovely and trusting emily told me I could do whatever I wanted. so I did.

since the timing was tight, this was kind of a figure it out as you go sort of deal. (not that I really do anything but...) anyway, I decided early on that I would prefer to do separate bowls and a platter set rather than one plate with indentations in it. knowing that throwing a platter large enough to hold 6 bowls on the wheel would be somewhat problematic, I decided to hand-build. so I found some small bowl molds so the whole thing would be consistent in its hand-built-iness. the platter was a different story; the mold I initially used turned out to be just too small, so I found one in the studio which would work.

I toyed with ideas of how to decorate it for quite some time until it hit me that my scribbles and/or lines motif would be perfect. I decided that a hand-drawn looking line which connected all the bowls would be pleasing to well, me, so I went with it. when I started drawing, I realized that the line would be a lot more wavy when viewed from the top than the perfect circle which was in my head. so I drew multiple lines, which you can line up any which way you please. I liked the connectedness of it and how everyone can have their own interpretation. I love how they turned out. my only disappointment was that the platter warped in the glaze fire, so the bowls sit a little more askance than I intended. dang platter. if I had to do it all over again, I would choose to make the platter part differently.

I forgot to measure the plate before I sent it out, but the bowls are about 4.25 inches in diameter x 2 inches tall.
I drew the lines with a black underglaze pencil and then put perfect white glaze over the top. when you do that, the lines turn kind of ball-point pen blue. the backs of the plate and outsides of the bowls I glazed pure white matte, which matches nicely with the perfect white in tone, and gives them all a nice shiny/not shiny contrast. told you I was going to experiment with that a bit. (more to come!)

anyway, here she is. and yes, I had a meltdown trying to get the photos to turn out right. and yes, despite my photoshopping, the color is still all screwy, blown-out and jumps around from photo to photo. and yes, I will try a less complicated camera next time. (since I can't make this one turn out the same every time, let alone between one photo to the next...)

and yes, I think I will make another seder plate.

here's another recreation. guess you're getting used to those, huh? this one was ordered by janine, who wanted hers to be a little smaller than the one I had in the holiday sale. it is, but it might be mostly shorter, since I had an epic bookkeeping breakdown and didn't measure or document anything before I sold it all off.

as you can see, this piece looks a lot better now than it did while in-progress, all yellow-y and omnious, though the dark blue inside still looks black. I swear it's blue.

the mouth is 6.25 inches at its widest. if you measure in the opposite direction, it's 4.25 wide, but that's at the base - the mouth isn't as wide. and it's 3.5 inches tall.
I glazed it midnight blue inside. no, really. and I put zinc-free clear over that in the hopes it would lighten up a little bit. it didn't. I also did that on the drips on the outside. I think it did lighten there because that was on top of the pure white matte glaze.

at the sale, I only had one little line bowl and it sold fast. so I ended up making a few new ones. this is a set for mary. I think maybe for her bathroom.

anyway, despite it being one of my “regular” shapes/motifs, this is a little different for me. usually I like to pair matte with gloss, but the avocado glaze is more of a satin than a gloss. and I like it. it makes me want to experiment a bit with satins, mattes and glosses.

each bowl is about 4.75 inches in diameter and 2.125 inches tall. and, you pretty much guessed it: the outside is chocolate matte underglaze. the inside and lines are avocado satin.

this is another commission. the lovely and generous sam was kind enough to let the original faux bois box I had at the holiday sale go, even though she clearly had dibs written all over it as soon as she saw it. so here's hers, #2.

it pretty much speaks for itself, except that it had no cracks or flaws. so there, tall box.

this is 3.75" tall at its tallest point x 5.75" wide x about 4.25" across the other way. and sam stuck with the original colors: eggshell wash over iron oxide with blizzard blue inside.

finally, some results. this is the faux wood box monica commissioned. she saw the short one I had in my sale and asked for a taller one, with pistachio inside.

and only THREE MONTHS LATER, voila!

it's 7.75" tall x 6.25" wide and 4.25" deep. and oh, there's a crack inside on one of the corners. now, now, the crack has no bearing on the structural integrity of this piece; it's perfectly fine since the crack doesn't go all the way through. but yes, it is aesthetically flawed. AND, the glaze did some stupid stuff in one of the other inside corners. stupid, stupid glaze. (outside: eggshell wash over iron oxide, inside: pistachio)

tonight I will be able to pick up the entirety of the pieces I made last session. here are some pics of the pieces after they've been glazed, BEFORE final firing.

sometimes when a piece is glazed it turns yellow. it doesn't actually show once you fire the piece; it's really just moisture seeping through. also, the outside hasn't been glazed in this pic, so that will be covered by white glaze when it's all said and done.

somehow, I ended up with three separate commissions for the “faux bois” (fake wood) boxes in varying heights. here are two of them, plus a little vase I made with scraps. it's really quite impossible for me to toss out perfectly good scraps, so I ended up with a couple of non-commissioned pieces this session as a result. I'm actually quite relieved; I still get a little panicky at the realization that I only have one or two unsold pieces lying around. WHAT IF SOMEONE NEEDS TO GIVE A GIFT? god forbid I don't have a crate of pottery stashed under my desk to sell.

surprisingly, this session did NOT allow me enough time to complete all my commissions. I thought I would be able to rock it all out, but alas, I still have a few things yet to make. so expect updates on yet another casserole dish, a square-ish orange bowl, and a squished vase with tons of black triangles hand-painted all over it.

I have a couple of new interesting pieces to do as well, but I'll let you know what those are all about when I get somewhere. CAN YOU BEAR THE SUSPENSE?

welcome to commissionville, where things are moving along. here are a few shots of what I am currently working on. (sorry for the crappy photos, but we're working with a camera phone here. and I refuse to do any photoshop work on camera phone photos. at least I do today.)

all of what you will see is greenware, meaning it is still wet clay and has not yet been fired. (this is when you have to be most careful with it and keep your damn fingernails away! away!

here's a large pot. one of two I am making this session:

a while back, my friend, sam, suggested we do a show together. sam is an uber-talented artist, and she and I showed our stuff together last year when I had the holiday clearance sale at work. knowing I don't have a lot of pottery to show (most was sold at the holiday sale and then spring was mostly commissions and MUGS!), knowing I would have to come up with some art to show, and knowing it's been a LONG TIME, I said yes.

the sale has grown to 6 of us arteests, and is a one-night-only sort of deal. on the first thursday of september. so now it's Go Time. (though for some reason, I keep slipping into Freak Out Time. so far, I have recorded Discouraged Crisis Numbers I and II. hm.)

here’s a good one to finish out the week: a super cute pitcher! it’s a small one though, for something like syrup. (if you’re the type of person who doesn’t pour directly from the bottle like we do in my house. who has time to warm it up when there’s food to be shoved into your mouth?)

I made this with an accompanying cup, but it was ruined in a tragic kiln accident in which kristy, my teacher, accidentally set the kiln for the wrong temperature and ruined about five of my pieces. I’ll post accusatory and incriminating photos of that later.

but still, the cuteness! it’s 4.5" tall x 2.75" in diameter. though if you count the handle and spout, it’s 4.25" across.
I’m not sure you can see very well in the photos, but the lines on the handle have chartreuse underglaze in them. the outside is pure white matte glaze, and the inside is french gray.

I did mention how I couldn’t stop using the wood design this past session, didn’t I? well, now it is time to mention how much I love succulents. and how if no one buys this, I am pretty sure it’s going to end up on my window sill at work, or maybe in the back yard, filled with succulents. or maybe, just maybe, I will plant it with succulents that are currently in the back yard, and put it on my window sill at work. though I am running out of room. and I have plenty of pots to fill. so someone please buy this.

oh! maybe I’ll fill it and sell it at the art show I'm doing in september. maybe. (more details on the show when I have them.)

slightly oval-y, this pot is 6.25" wide at its widest and just under 6" at its narrowest x 3" tall. it’s a little “organic” in shape, to look more stumpy. like a wood stump, not like short and squat. though I was aiming for that too.
I coated this with iron oxide in hopes that it would make the grain pattern stand out, then I covered it in pure white matte glaze.

the last of the spring commissions.

my friend, rachael, has seen some great success in her portrait business lately, and decided that she deserved something fancy to hold her art supplies in. so she asked me to make her 3 sizes of jars. canisters without lids. brush holders. whatever you want to call them. (please tell me if you know what to call them; I am drawing a blank here.) she asked for the paint brush, paint tube and x-acto imagery, and I decided to make them silhouettes, a la the AK-47 mug and went from there.

I feel like these pictures don't really do them justice; they are much better in person. I kind of shot these all a little over-exposed. still learning...

also still learning how to keep the cat away from my greenware (that's pottery that hasn't been fired yet, which means it's still slightly wet). and, well, still susceptible to CAT CLAWS. (see photo #4 below.) sorry, rach. simon le cat is not, however. he thought it added just a little conceptual oomph to the x-acto jar to have some cuts inside. and unfortunately at that point, I was powerless to smooth them out any more than I did. dang cat.

the small paint tube jar is 3.25" in diameter x just under 4.5" tall.
the medium x-acto jar is 3.5" in diameter x 5" tall.
the large paint brush jar hovers somewhere around 3.75-4" wide (it's a little bit oval-y) x just over 6" tall.
all of them have shiny turquoise glaze inside, though for some reason, it looks different in the x-acto jar. I guess it's a good example of how the same glaze, applied by the same person, in the same way, at the same time, can still turn out different. the wind shifted direction, I guess.

the grand mug finale!

I think brandy was the first to ask me to do some mugs for her, and she offhandedly asked for about 10. which I was both excited about and dreading since, well, that's a lot of mugs. if it gives you any perspective, I generally make about 12-17 pieces per class session. but with chris abroad for most of the spring and me free to spend my saturdays in the pottery studio without self-imposed guilt for not spending my free time with him, I pulled it off. oh, and also because I knew b wouldn't care if they were all the same size. so I just threw a bunch of mugs and hoped for the best.

and they turned out awesome, if I do say so myself. actually, I don't have to: chris will tell you himself that he almost didn't let them out of the house. and ya, maybe I took a lot of photos under the guise that they are a large set (9 total), so I HAVE to post extra, right?

these are all approximately 3.25" in diameter and they range from 3" tall (shortest) to 4.25" at the tallest. luckily, b and her husband both spent some years in japan and have embraced the no-handle tradition... (if she had asked for handles I might have imploded.)
she also wisely choose the final glaze colors: inside some are pistachio and some blizzard blue (might be a new favorite of mine...) and outside they are liquid luster bronze, which has a slight metallic look to it.

these are the “safety mugs” I made in case something happened to natalie’s mugs. nothing happened to any of them during firing, so I had two extras to do with as I wished. michael saw them on my desk, awaiting glaze, and asked me to glaze them in brown and orange. so I did, and he bought them. (thanks, michael!) it's been a while since I did any line cups in anything other than white outside, so this was a nice reminder of how they look with a dark outside.

including the handles, they are both about 6.25" wide (and 4.75" across if you don't count the handles) x 3" tall.

speaking of mugs, here are the ones ordered by my bonus mom, randy (chris’s actual mom).

you know how sometimes I have a problem making things all the same size unless I pay close attention? well, this time I paid close attention. and they turned out really close in size. like REALLY close. that's what happens when you use a ruler and give a shit... however, I have to admit, I lived life on the edge and only made two; not allowing for any mishaps. lucky for me they came out beautifully, except not how I envisioned.

I was worried about the glaze filling in the scribbles. on occasion, I bypass this problem by throwing scribble pieces in porcelain, which pretty much erases the problem (it fires white), but makes it so I have to glaze it in clear shiny glaze at the end (for food safety). I didn’t want these to be shiny, and I didn’t have any porcelain available, so I used regular trail mix clay. then I got a little OCD with the glaze, wiping it back a little in the areas I wanted it to be thinner and not glop up. evidently, I wiped it back a lot instead, and the end result is that the clay shows through. while it's not what I wanted or expected, I actually really like the rusticity of these. (randy, if you don’t, please don’t feel obligated to buy them; I will sell them to someone else. my feelings won’t be hurt at all, and I’d make some porcelain ones for you in the fall.)

both are 3.25" in diameter, 4.5-ish" with handle. (the handles are where they vary most in size.) but both are just under 3.75" tall.

finally, here are the mugs ordered by my friend, natalie. she saw the BLOOD CUPS and decided she wanted two, in a coffee mug version.

these ended up being quite large, but who knows, maybe natalie and her husband, jamie, LOVE coffee. like REALLY LOVE it. not being a coffee drinker, it’s hard for me to gauge how much people might actually drink in one sitting. and, well, I know some people who just might be addicted. I’m not going to name any names or anything, but this reminds me: if you like good coffee, and you like the earth, check out grounds for change. owned, operated and devotedly guzzled by good friends of mine, they are doing it right, and sustainably so.

okay, back to the mugs: natalie requested flame orange glaze on the inside of hers, and french gray for the inside of jamie’s. both are glazed in pure white matte on the oustide.

remember michael? well, he re-did his kitchen and needed a large-ish bowl to put out on the counter for fruit and stuff. so I made one. well, I made a wonky one and am convinced I can do better. so I will when I return to throwing in the fall. for now, michael has this.

about 9.5" in diameter and 2.5 inches tall.
the inside is pure white matte and the outside is ripe apple red to go with the new brick in michael's kitchen. I textured the outside with grooves to give the glaze some depth.

I liked this piece a lot. my friend, erin snapped it up to give as a retirement gift, so I might have to make another once I start back up in the fall. for some reason when I tried making the casseroles this time around, they came out smaller than I had hoped, so it might be a good exercise for me anyway. or I'll just cheat and hand-build the whole thing. this is actually wheel thrown AND hand-built; I threw a doughnut shape for the walls and then flattened the sides out to make it rectangular. ish. then I attached the bottom and handles by hand.

since erin had to leave in a rush, and this piece had only been sitting on my bookcase for WEEKS, I didn't get measurements, but I managed to snap a few decent pictures. I think it's about 7 inches wide x about 10 or 11 inches long (including handles) and maybe 3 inches tall.
the outside is pure white matte and the inside is pistachio.

I admit it, I was initially disappointed in the results of this one. this was another case of the pot shrinking more than I expected. (I expected a big planter, not a medium sized one.) and I think somehow it got smooshed in the second firing, so it's slightly more "organic" than I had intended. but then it grew on me. enough to make me question whether I should just keep it for myself, and then to make a second attempt at a bigger one (which I'll get around to revealing someday...)

anyhow, I can't get enough of the fake wood effect. I did a fair few pieces this session with it. (also to be revealed at later dates). and I can't wait to see this planted with something. as long as it's not ivy. that would gross me out.

this planter is 8.5 inches wide at its widest and more like 8 inches where it got smooshed x just over 5.5 inches tall. so it would fit a gallon nursery plant. I think.
I rubbed it with iron oxide before glazing it in pure white matte. that helped make the "faux bois" (wood grain) stand out a bit more.

you may not know this, but there's this thing I do a lot on my pottery. a scribble thing. I don't have a lot of it documented on this site, but I do it a fair bit - evidently on pieces that slip past me posting them for some reason or another. anyway, you can see it here. in my experiment-with-underglaze-pencil-drawing phase, I decided to give some scribbles a try in another way. and here they are. I kind of like how they turned out and how they look like I drew them left-handed. while hanging upside down on monkey bars. drunk.

this bowl is a decent size. not huge, but not small either. kind of like what you'd put a big bunch of grapes in. or rice for a family of four: it's 6.75 inches wide x 3 inches high. the outside is a new color for me: pippin green. and the inside is perfect white glaze over black underglaze pencil (which turns blue in the firing process).

I thought about making this a "B is for bowl" and drawing a B on it, but changed my mind just before glazing. and this color combo is one I can't seem to get enough of. it always turns out beautifully. well, in my opinion it's beautiful. I guess I should say it's a fairly reliable glaze combination.

this is a medium sized bowl: it's 5.5 inches in diameter x 2.75 inches tall.
the outside is chocolate brown underglaze and the inside is pure white matte, with drips of aqua gemstone glaze.

I was inspired by the letter "a" hanging above my friend sam's desk. and, well sam's art. sam does lovely things with type. and other things too. and when we showed together, it was magical. okay, it was pretty cool and I decided to give it a shot. I like how it turned out, but am not sure I'll go further with it, at least in this style. maybe with the black wax or some inlay. mostly I was bummed out about the green glaze drip on the corner. the color was an experiment, which albeit beautiful, was also a bit runny. thankfully, sam didn't care; she bought the dish. (thanks, sam!)

wouldn't you know, I forgot to measure the dish before I sent it on to its new home. it's about the same width as the long trays I've made, so I am guessing it's about 6.5 inches wide x about 1.75 inches high. and the length... maybe 8 inches?
I used black underglaze pencil to draw the "a." when covered with perfect white glaze, it turns blue. magic! on the outside, I put scotch pine over vanilla cream. (I think. I'll have to look that one up.)

it seems to be mug season. I have orders for about a dozen mugs this session, of all different types. here are some I made a couple years ago. some of you may recognize them; they are in use, in my kitchen. (ya, that's my fabulous new kitchen.)

I made a set of two for dudley and then made a few more. according to my step-mom, who received a set for christmas that year, they hold 12 oz. of liquid perfectly, which I totally did on purpose. ya, totally.

anyway, I am heading home now to trim about 7 mugs of a different kind before class tomorrow. so if you are in the neighborhood, stop by and rob the house. I'll be the one in the basement with the music blaring.

when I made leslie's casserole dish, I made a spare, which I used as a glaze experiment. actually, it was a black wax experiment more than anything else. I applied the wax OVER the glaze instead of under, to see what would happen. okay, and out of laziness; it's really tedious and time consuming to wipe back the gaze from the wax if you put it on first. anyway, the effect is pretty cool, for a more rustic look. I wonder though, if the type of wax I used made a difference. I used the classroom's store of wax, which is a different brand and consistency than mine.

the final piece is approximately the same size as leslie's dish (same mold used):
6.5 inches wide x 15.25 inches long x 1.75 inches tall.

I've been sitting across from sarah starr for several years now. in fact, I would venture to guess that most of my time at work has been with her, and it would be more than fair to say she's my work wife. recently, however, we were forced to move apart. this is my breakup present to her. I debated planting something in it, but starr is a plant gal too, so I decided she'd probably prefer to choose what goes in it herself. maybe she'll even share a photo when she does?

sarah is also a sucker for tiny things, so I made this one pretty small. it's 3.5 inches wide x 1.75 inches tall.
the star is carved into the side and painted with orange underglaze and clear over the top (and the rest of the outside). the inside is nassau blue.

anyway, this turned out pretty great, if I do say so... that's why I took so many photos. well, that and because I had a hard time getting the whole dish in frame, so I felt like I needed a bunch to show you the whole thing. and the details. there's a lot of stuff going on here.

when I was making the BLOOD CUPS, I was having an off day; I couldn't throw two things the same size to save my own life. I ended up with a bunch of random bowl/cups, none quite the same, so I decided to glaze them all different colors as well.

so far, two have been snapped up (thank you, jen c.!). the fiesta yellow, and the flame orange. but here they all are. (I couldn't help but to photograph them all together, look how cute they are stacked!) the ones which are still available are the aqua color and the two blue ones. one was supposed to be lavender, but I was using glaze from the bottom of the bucket, and I suspect there was a lot of cobalt settling down there which turned it more blue than purple. that's the large one. the smaller blue one is glazed in cobalt blue. it did some really nice things when it fired, as you can see in the pics below. the medium sized bowl was done in pacific blue, which just might be my new favorite color. it's a really lovely aqua in person.

I swear when I threw this it was not nearly as wonky as it is now. I know that as I am working I sometimes pick still-wet pieces up in ways that perhaps are not so good for their symmetry, but I swear it was not this crooked, even when I turned it in for firing.

anyway, despite its stealthy wonkiness, it's a fairly good sized bowl. it's 9.5 inches across x 2.5 inches tall.
the outside glaze color is french gray - a new color for me. I'm still experimenting with it; it seems to be a bit hard to get an even coat on, but I did pretty well on this piece. inside, it's pure white matte.

finally, the blood cups! I got a guy at work who is MUCH better than me at photography to help me figure out how the heck to shoot my stuff reliably well. I hope. this was the first photoshoot, and I'll try again soon to know if I can duplicate what he showed me on my own. I have to admit; I already tried shooting something else with another camera, and was less successful; the buttons don't all do the same things, dang it! but of course that also could have been because I was shooting a friend's back tattoo in a poorly lit bathroom.

anyway, here are the BLOOD CUPS.
final sizes are just approximately 3 inches in diameter x about 2 inches tall.they vary a bit, being handmade and all. the outside glaze color is pure white matte. the little bit of tan you see showing through on the front of one is the color of the clay. and inside? BLOOD. okay, no. really it's the new and improved ripe apple red (it used to be less red and more sucky, so I rarely if ever used it).

here's another commission from my sale. I had a couple of these cups at the show which sold very quickly. everyone grumbled about them already being sold, but my friend, jane, is the one who asked me to make more. she kept saying "BLOOD CUPS. I need some BLOOD CUPS." which was both funny and unnerving. maybe that's why no one else asked me to make more.

anyway, I figured that I'd show these in progress not only so jane knew they were really being made, but also because I am fairly sure I've never shown you what glaze looks like before it's fired. it's chalky. and more often than not, does not reflect the color it will actually turn out to be. these cups will be (blood) red and shiny on the inside and matte white on the outside. like this bowl. the greenish tinge you see in these photos is actually wax. I applied it after I put the red glaze on, so the white glaze wouldn't mix into the red glaze. who wants milk in their BLOOD? ew.

anyway, I should be able to pick these up tomorrow evening, all done-sies and lovely. and if they don't turn out by some freak of firing (which also happens), I've made more.

a bit I'm currently working on.

remember my semi-impromptu sale? this is a direct result. at the sale, I had a plate with these fun bubble/dot designs on it which had already sold by the time my friend dylan saw it. dylan must be a fabulous husband because he commissioned me to make this dish for his lovely wife, who is a big pottery fan. (apparently said wife has collected so much that she's finally had to limit her purchases to functional pieces because she's pretty much out of room. luckily, I do functional.)

anyway, here it is in progress. at the point I took these pictures, I had just finished hand-painting the bubble/dot designs on it with black wax. it's still not glazed, but I intend to glaze it in "pistachio," which is one of my favorite glazes. (dylan, now is your chance to change your mind on glaze color if you want. speak now, or forever use a pistachio casserole dish!)

I'll post again when it's done. hopefully better pictures though... and with a cleaner backdrop... am I really about to post my cluttered coffee table on the internets?

there's this fun thing in portland where all the galleries open their doors on the first thursday of every month and have music and food and wine and show off their new shows. it's smartly called First Thursday. my company has a big open space on the first floor, just as you come inside the front doors that we have recently deemed a gallery space, and today, this First Thursday, I am not only organizing a show, but I actually have a poster in it as well.

I'm probably not supposed to show you, so you'll actually come, but I realize that most of you live far away and can't come anyway, so here is my poster:

it's an excerpt from the haitian national anthem. the small type tells you the english translation (thank you, kristin, for your help in dealing with the french). the red part is something lovely and inspiring like "our souls will be strengthened" which I thought was appropriate. when i was done with the poster, I looked at it and thought, "this is so ME." I just love me some classic beautiful type.

anyway, this is a pretty sizable show. about 30 different artists/designers. here are some photos of some of what you can look forward to if you do make it. you can see ALL the posters here, and buy them if you live afar. actually, if you want me to buy you one tonight, I will. they are cheaper at the show tonight than on the site. finally, here's the last piece with slip inlay that I did for the holidays. I made this one especially for randy, because I based it off a photo she had taken in great falls, virginia, of all things – a vulture:

obviously, I could only approximate the trees below the bird, so I did my best to hand-carve the bird, then took artistic license with the branches. I was pretty pleased with how it turned out.

I didn't measure this piece, but I'm guessing it was about 6 inches tall or so. it has shiny turquoise glaze on the inside to suggest sky and clear glaze on the outside.

well, I am lazy. honestly, I got so wrapped up in designing this in my spare time, I forgot all about posting my pots.

but I'm back. this is the another of the slip inlaid pots from december. funny enough, this was originally going to be the backup for the AK-47 mug. when I am making something specifically for someone, I make more than one, in case it doesn't turn out. but after I did the handle on johnny's mug, I got all pissy and decided to heck with that and I'll just make it into whatever I want! so I squished it a little at the top, making it oval and went for a design exactly the opposite of an assault rifle.

this little pot is just about 3.75 inches across at the widest part of the oval. it's 3.25 inches at the narrow part and 4.25 inches tall.
like the wish pot, I put "pistachio" glaze inside and clear glaze outside. the queen anne's lace design was done in black slip inlay.

this might be the best thing I have ever made. I'm tempted to leave it at that, but for those of you who might just be left scratching your heads, I'll explain: when my friend John saw the inlay technique, he sent me and email saying he would pay "top dollar" for a mug with this on it:

so OF COURSE I had to do it.
it's 3.25 inches wide. if you include the handle, it's almost 5 inches. oh, and it's about 4.5 inches tall.
clear glaze over the outside, "ripe apple (aka blood) red" on the inside.
i'm obviously giving john first dibs on this one. but as usual, I can make more. and if he doesn't want it...

as promised, here is another piece I did using slip inlay. just for kicks I had it on the table at my sale - as greenware. (that means it hadn't been fired yet, but was air-dry) and it sold! thanks, rocker, for having faith it would turn out. I could have ruined christmas...

I stuck with black inlay because I switched to a smoother clay (grogless g-mix in case anyone cares) and there just wasn't any other color option, though I had initially envisioned a dark brown design. despite the inlay being stupidly labor intensive, I really love the result. I think I'm going to have to limit myself to a couple per session though if I ever want to get anything else accomplished. I managed to eke out four items with inlay this term (each with increasing detail), but I did devote a day and a half to carving, filling and scraping and ignoring things like eating, drinking and going to the bathroom.

this little pot is just about 4.25 inches across at its widest x 3 inches in height. it has pistachio glaze on the inside which turned out to be quite subtle. I stuck with just clear glossy glaze on the outside so the design would show to its maximum. we're all about full potential here!

today I had a huge sale. I put everything I had lying around (including stuff that was laying around my house) and took it to work. in december, we often have people sitting at a big table in the atrium of our building, hocking their wares. so I figured it was worth a shot. plus, I had a backlog of things that hadn't sold. or stuff that I hadn't even TRIED selling.

being that I was too embarrassed to sit out there by myself, I suckered my friends sam, sef and tram into bringing stuff too. sam paints. sef draws. and tram, well, she and her husband have made these amazing plant pots... they'll be featured in dwell magazine in april if that tells you anything.

pottery has started back up! but I missed the first class due to a schedule change, then there was this:

this was taken this morning, a week and a day after the initial incident where my thumb and an x-acto knife got in a MUUUUCH too close conversation. I'm fine. no stitches (just some glue), but it's healing very slowly and well, has put a damper on throwing. luckily I had 4 pieces thrown before this happened, so I got to experiment a little with something new: slip inlay. basically what you do is this:
1. you throw a pot
2. you let it dry and become "leather-hard"
3. you trim the bottom, like normal
4. then you carve on it. whatever you want.
5. you then cover the carving with clay which has been thinned out (so you can paint it on) and stained different colors.
6. you then carefully scrape away the extra clay to reveal the design, sitting nice and snug in your carving.

here's a few pics of my work in progress. I can't wait to see these done. I might be hooked on this process.

M A R B L E I Z I N G

when I was a kid, my stepdad had a 1973 chevrolet monte carlo. royal blue. it was a well-used car, and through the years, it eventually rusted out in spots. due to coastal living, my stepfather also often lost the battle to keep his car clean to the local seagulls. we knew he had given up all hope when one day he grabbed a can of spray paint (blue) and sprayed over the um, problem areas. this method of car care lasted longer than most of the rest of the family would have liked, and several shades of blue spray paint were eventually applied. we affectionately called the method "marbleizing."

in that vein, I'd like to show you a nice little set. is something a little different for me, in that I mixed two different colors of clay together and then threw with them. so the brown you see is dark clay, and the creamy color is light clay. there's no royal blue, or just blue, but hindsight is 20/20 isn't it?

the cups are actually a good size for tea, and the bottle is probably good size for creamer (if you take your tea that way). or, sake. it would make a great sake pitcher.

the cups are both 1.75 inches tall x 3 to 3.25 inches in diameter. the little pitcher is 3.5 inches high x about 3 inches at its widest.
this set because of the marble effect, I covered the outsides of all of them in clear glaze, then put a new glaze inside. well, the glaze is new to me. I was looking for a nice orange, but couldn't find one, so I settled on trying one called "wonder red." it really came out more like a flesh tone. kind of like someone blushing. in fact, I think the entire set reminds me of skin tones. I could name the set "study in nude," if I were that much of a dork. luckily I am NOT.

when I was learning the technique of brushing another, darker slip onto the outside of a pot for the crackle effect, I did an experiment. (let me know how you think it turned out; I still haven't made up my mind.)

I threw this bowl, and painted on a very thick, uneven coat of "raisin" colored slip on the outside. I then poked holes around the top of the bowl, large enough to poke stuff through. I was thinking about ribbon or leather. being that the final effect was a rather raw, rough one, I opted for the leather over the ribbon. ribbon just didn't go (and I'm all about harmony...)

approximately 2.5 inches tall x 6 inches in diameter.
transparent glaze over the entire thing. no colors added, just clay color. the slight whitish/blueish color on the outside is where the clear glaze pooled up.

this little vase is just taller than 3.5 inches tall x 2.75 inches in diameter.

unlike the bowls in the make show, this one is done with glazes, not two colors of clay. so I made the whole thing with one clay color, then made the crackle effect, then glazed. I used a red underglaze on the cracks and on the inside. I then applied celadon glaze over the outside.

(or, it will just bounce.)

these two vases are tiny. okay, they aren't really miniatures or anything, but they are pretty darn small. sure, you can fit a few flowers in them, but they have to be of the small variety. like dandelion size. it's possible I made these before I made a sake set. you know, for practice.

the small vase is 2 inches high x just over 2.5 inches across.
the "tall" vase is slightly over 3 inches high x about 2.5 inches in diameter.
I put a slight texture on the tops and glazed them pistachio green over eggshell wash (matte white) glaze. it's VERY subtle in person.

I'm whining under my breath about the batch of photos I've been posting from; they take a fair bit of retouching to get the colors adjusted. no offense to chris; they're great detail shots; we just had no idea how to light them. so that is partially why the holdup in getting new stuff posted. also, I'm obsessing about my yard now. that's fair warning; I might actually start posting yard before and after pics. heh.

tonight is the last night of pottery class before I take the summer off. but I will continue to post what pieces I have made in the past, and of course sell them.

I gave this bowl to my father-in-law's girlfriend last xmas. her name is laurie. hence, the name.

unfortunately, I neglected to take any measurements of it before I sent it off to its new home. but from what I remember, it was about 5 or 6 inches in diameter and oh, let's say 3.5 inches tall.

I used chocolate brown underglaze for the outside. it was a thin-ish coat, which is why the clay shows through at the top. inside, I used shiny turquoise glaze. I just love that color. there's a close-up shot so you can really see it.

this vase was meant to look a little more natural (less controlled and modern looking) than my normal stuff.

okay, I have to admit it: I did it that way because just as I took the vase off the wheel - still wet - I accidentally scraped the side of it with my fingernail. fingernails are totally your enemy in pottery. you have to keep them cut super short or you end up with divots in pretty much everything you do. so when faced with an irreparable gash in the side, I decided to embrace it and MAKE MORE! so it turned into an interpretation of grass blowing in the wind. (cheesy, I know, but it worked so I went with it.)

the measurements of this piece are: 3.5 inches across at the base, 2 inches at the top x 5.75 inches high.
I did the inside and the lip in chocolate brown underglaze. I put iron oxide on the outside to bring out the texture and then glazed it in celadon.

sorry I have been absent for a while; I was out of town last week, and honestly, just a slacker the days that I wasn't gone. but I'm back on track now!

this is a good example of how I get inspiration from many places. this one: this I got from a rug. (ha. bet you thought I was going to say "nature" or something cool like that. nope. a RUG.) I saw the design on a rug online, grabbed a jpg of it, changed the color combo, and drew my own leaves, and and lo and behold, we now have a vase with leaves on it. here are a bunch of photos so you can get the full picture of the design.

3 inches in diameter x about 6 inches tall.
I hand-painted the leaves in orange and chocolate brown underglaze. then covered the whole thing with a transparent gloss glaze.

of the tiniest kind

moving on to another fancypants pottery trick, here's a bowl with a crackle finish. the way I did this was to throw a pot with thick-ish walls, then paint it with a darker colored slip. I did this one with a fairly thin coating, so you can see the darker spots are where the slip was thicker; the lighter spots were the thin application. you can see my brush strokes.

after that, I painted on a clear, MAGIC sticky substance and let it sit for 30+ minutes so it hardened, kind of like a shell. after that, I spun the bowl again, carefully NOT touching the outside, and pushed the walls out, so they bowed outward and the shell cracked.

every variable in this scenario makes for different cracking patterns, thicknesses, color difference, etc. so it's fun to see what happens in the end. always a surprise!

the bowl is 6 inches in diameter and about 3.75 inches in height.
since I carved grooves at the bottom, I applied a rusty looking stain called iron oxide that gave the bottom the black sketchy look. then I coated the whole bowl in transparent glaze.

there's this stuff potters use called "black wax." when you apply it, it repels the glaze and leaves the area... you guessed it: black. this is the first of a few vases I did back in spetember of '07 using black wax. all the vases in this little series had bold geometric patterns on them. (i'll try to post them consecutively.)

i've included a ton of photos of this one because the pattern isn't the same all the way around, and I doubt it's one you could guess. if you look close, i've provided a 365° view for you.

in red and white

a lot of what I have learned in pottery is to let go of expectations and intentions and embrace what actually happens. it's a good life lesson, really.

this piece is another example of that lesson: any of you who know me very well, know that I have a bit of a perfectionist in me. (yes, mom, that's an understatement...) I strive for perfection, and I honestly wish that more of my pieces turned out looking like they were made by a machine. let's face it, if you can hand-throw something and make it machine perfect, you are a master. a rockstar. a badass.

so I intend to make each piece as perfect as it can be. and I intended the red in this little bowl to come out as a nice, even, solid red. however, red glazes are notoriously difficult; they are rarely true reds. in an effort to get a more vibrant color, I used an underglaze, and brushed it on, which harbors its own dangers... and this didn't come out how I intended. but it's actually kind of charming. not perfect, but still good enough for candy.

letting a little more of my fancypants show!:

this is made from two kinds of clay. the base is made from clay called "white salmon," and the dots are a chocolate brown clay. the dots are actually just slightly raised from the surface of the lighter clay. when I went to glaze, I left them both their natural color - I only glazed them in a clear gloss. but the inside of the cup is done in "latte" glaze, which is a creamy color when it's applied thick. it breaks and becomes that nice rust color (like the stripe around the top of the cup) when it's applied in a thin coat.

how's that for a little pottery lesson?

I hand-built this one and I added a little part that juts out. reminiscent of a handle, though honestly, I doubt you'd really use it that way.it's not perfectly round, so it just sits really nicely in your hand. though it'd make a pretty cute little vase too.

okay, here are the rest of the stats:
2.5 inches in diameter. then the little side tab sticks out and makes it just under 3.25 inches at its widest. it's 4.75 inches tall.

after I posted that casserole dish the other day (see CASSEROLE, feb. 04, 2009), I realized there's another theme I tend to do on my pottery, and that's a carved sort of scribble. (I think I started it on a bowl, where it was a SCRIBBOWL. get it?) anyway, the carvings aren't super easy to see in the photos I previously posted, so I thought I'd give you a better idea of what I'm talking about.

this is a SCRIB-VASE. okay, that doesn't really work. it's a vase. with the scribble thing. this one isn't really for sale; I love it and keep it on my desk at work. but if you would like one like it, let me know, and I'll make you one. or you can try to bribe me to sell this one to you and make myself a new one. but good luck with that.

okay, I am admittedly obsessed with that drip glaze thing, but after looking at what I have posted, I realize it looks like that is all I use.

I SWEAR, it isn't.

(in fact, I take requests. so if you see something you like, but don't like the colors I used on it, speak up and I'll make another. in the meantime, I will post a couple of non-drippy items, so you won't be bored out of your minds.)

here are some non-drippy teacups, for example.
one cup is about 3.25 inches in diameter and the other is more like 3.5 inches. (remember, handmade means that nothing is an exact duplicate. plus, I think it helps them stack better.) both are about 1.5 inches tall. I used a brown underglaze on the inside and the outside is a glossy celadon (light green).

I keep talking about that blue drip glaze combo I like. so I figured I'd give you an up-close-and-personal view of how lovely it is.

this piece is close to the same size as the last one:
about 5.25 inches in diameter x approximately 2.75 inches in height
the outside is a nice matte chocolate brown.

okay, back to basics. not that plates aren't basic. anyway, this one is a bowl. just a simple bowl.

5 inches in diameter x 2.75 inches (or so) tall
matte white glaze... surprise, surprise. BUT, I added a matte green around the top (northwest woods glaze, I think). it's also got some drips inside.
